Some hazards in the manufacture and use of plastics.

چکیده
The expansion of the plastics industry during the last few years has introduced the possibility of hazards from new polymers and from modifications to old products. The first two sections of this paper deal with the diminishing incidence of dermatitis in synthetic resin plants using formaldehyde and with the toxic properties of some chemicals added during the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride compositions. After a brief reference to the hazards of catalysts used in the manufacture of new polymers in the polythene series, an account is given of the dangers of polytetrafluoroethylene. At high temperatures this important new polymer gives rise to decomposition products that may be harmful when inhaled, and smoking contaminated tobacco is one of the commonest ways in practice by which workmen may be affected. Animal experiments have confirmed the dangers of excessive heating of this polymer although the symptoms differ from those in human beings so that it is still not possible to incriminate any one of the products evolved at these temperatures. In a description of the hazards of manufacture of copolymers of butadiene that are new to this country the toxic properties of the monomers are given in some detail since

Evaluating Occupational Health and Safety Management in Selected Plastics Manufacturing Organizations in Awka Metropolis Nigeria
The concept of Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) involves the identification of hazards and risks in the workplace and the definition of the rights, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in the implementation of control and or preventive measures. The study identifies 5 different classes of hazards to include – chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial hazar...
متن کاملOccupational and environmental health hazards in the plastics industry.
A brief description of the potential occupational health hazards encountered in the manufacture of plastics (polymers) is given. In general, these hazards are due to the monomers used to make the various plastics, to unreacted monomer contained within the finished products, and to the fillers, stabilizers, pigments, inhibitors, and initiators used in fabricating the finished products. They run ...
متن کاملHplc Determination of Free Acrylic Acid and Monomers in Polyacrylates
Acrylic polymers have broad applications in the manufacture of paints and paper coatings, emulsion adhesives, plastics, lighting, glass replacements, personal care products and even dental fillings. However, acrylic acid and some acrylate oligomers and monomers adversely affect human health as eye and skin irritants. Exposure to monomers occurs primarily in the workplace via inhalation and derm...

Hazard analysis was conducted to identify critical control points (CCPs) during cocoa processing and milk chocolate manufacture and applied into a hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) plan. During the process, the different biological, physical and chemical hazards identified at each processing stage in the hazard analysis worksheet were incorporated into the HACCP plan to assess ...
متن کاملAdditives in plastics.
The polymers used in plastics are generally harmless. However, they are rarely used in pure form. In almost all commercial plastics, they are "compounded" with monomeric ingredients to improve their processing and end-use performance. In order of total volume used, these monomeric additives may be classified as follows: reinforcing fibers, fillers, and coupling agents; plasticizers; colorants; ...
